About

Story

Nicolás Robayo Pardo, smiling, on a rooftop terrace in Bogotá

I grew up in Bogotá and went to school at the Colegio de la Enseñanza. In 2016 I spent a semester at Hillcrest High School in Ottawa, finished the Ontario Secondary School Diploma there, and came back with the English I still work in every day.

I studied industrial engineering at Universidad de los Andes, which at Uniandes means a quantitative degree: operations research, statistics, production and logistics, with a minor in International Studies on the side. I liked the modelling courses enough to become a teaching assistant for Principles of Optimization and Finance, writing the official assignment solutions in Xpress-Mosel and building the grading tools. In 2020 I joined the INVIAS bridge-management research project as a research assistant and wrote my thesis on it: a multi-criteria mixed-integer model for planning interventions on about 1,500 national bridges, in gurobipy. The B.Sc. was conferred in April 2021, cum laude.

I had begun graduate courses in 2019, so the master's followed directly: a thesis-based M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering with a concentration in operations research and applied statistics, conferred in April 2023, also cum laude. The thesis was a self-controlled case series on 55,114 HPV-vaccinated girls, estimated with conditional Poisson regression on public data. In parallel I was the teaching assistant of the optimization course of the Master in Data Analytics Intelligence (MIAD) on Coursera, with its first cohort in August 2021.

The work since then has been one move, repeated: take a model and turn it into a system people use. Credit-scoring models at Banco de Bogotá, with explanations and stability checks the risk team could read. A star-schema risk warehouse and, with a colleague, a versioned platform of Shiny apps and APIs at Colombia's central counterparty, with automated risk back-testing. The data platform of LifeOne, a Central American assistance company, built end to end on AWS for a three-person team I built and lead (two data engineers hired). And, with Alejandro Palacio, the maintenance and extension of a pipeline that turns about 3.8 million smart-card validations a day into origin–destination matrices for Bogotá's bus network, for TRANSMILENIO S.A.

Since February 2026 I live in Berlin, looking for a hands-on data engineering or data science role in a larger team, where I can adopt its stack and go deeper technically than a team of three allows. My German is at a B2 course after a Goethe A2 certificate in November 2025; my working language has been English for five years.

Teaching

Teaching is where I learned to write a model down so that someone else can run it.

Teaching assistant, Optimization course of the Master in Data Analytics Intelligence (MIAD), Universidad de los Andes on Coursera · 2021–2022 · with Prof. Andrés Medaglia. Wrote and graded Python/PuLP case assignments — marketing mix, depot location, project selection and scheduling, multi-objective location — exams and lecture material; tutored the programme's first cohort (August 2021).

Undergraduate teaching assistant, Principles of Optimization (2018-2, 2019-1, 2019-2) and Finance (2019-2), Universidad de los Andes. Wrote the official assignment solutions (Xpress-Mosel), built grading tools (VBA) and ran training sessions.

Research assistant (2020-2), INVIAS bridge-management research project, School of Engineering research centre (contract VICE 3001).

Personal

At most a few lines. Facts, not adjectives.

Public transport is where my work and my days meet: in Bogotá I modelled the bus network; in Berlin I ride it and notice the dwell times. I moved to Berlin in February 2026; its queer and electronic-music scene is part of why — festivals, not clubs, if you ask what I do on weekends. I bake desserts more often than is reasonable for one household. I have been paragliding once and intend to repeat it. The minor in International Studies left me with a standing interest in international economics and geopolitics.
